Profile of Darren Star – Sex and the City Series Creator

With the latest installment in the Sex and the City franchise hitting theaters nationwide today, we thought it would be appropriate to acknowledge the man behind the curtain, Darren Star.

This Golden Globe award-winner and multiple Emmy-nominee was born and raised in Potomac, Maryland and first rose to prominence with his massive hit Beverly Hills 90210.

Fun Fact: Darren’s inspiration for the series was his high school alma matter – Winston Churchill High School.

In a shrewd move, Star purchased the rights to Candace Bushnell’s book, Sex and the City, a compilation of her fresh and frank columns for the New York Observer in the early nineties. He then took his idea for the series to the only network gutsy enough to air it… HBO. Seriously folks…it’s not TV it’s HBO!

The cable network offered Star creative freedom that regular broadcast television could not, resulting in Sex in the City containing more explicit sex scenes and racy dialogue.

Its been two years since the last film, and fans have been begging for more.

So what’s next for Star? He’s bringing sexy back to HBO with a new series called Diary of a Manhattan Call Girl, based on columnist Tracy Quan’s semi-autobiographical novel.

It’s time to go mix myself a Cosmo – it’s five o’clock somewhere, right?
